The alternator works with the battery to generate power for the electrical components of a vehicle, like the interior and exterior lights, and the instrument panel. An alternator gets its name from the term alternating current (AC).

Alternators that are being installed on inboard gasoline engines must have a certification that meets the requirements for ignition protections from the US Coast Guard. The Marine Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has a strict set of guidelines they use to test marine alternators called the Marine SAE J1171.
